Purpose: To prepare officers and enlisted personnel for qualification as members of a damage control organization aboard ship.
Scope: The scope includes proper techniques and procedures for general shipboard firefighting. Fires include Class Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie fires involving conventional and nuclear weapons. This course provides training on fire party positions including scene leader, nozzleman, hoseman, plugman and accessman using direct fire attack procedures. J-495-0412 is for personnel going to oxygen breathing apparatus (OBA) equipped ships, and J-495-0416 is for personnel going to self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) equipped ships. The OPNAV damage control proficiency satisfied by this course is Level II.

Operational Information.
- Normal hours of operation are from 0700 – 11630 Monday thru Friday. Weekend training will only be conducted with prior approval from OTC Commanding Officer or designated representative.
- Authorized attire. Students shall arrive in the uniform of the day, with authorized PT gear for wear underneath the firefighting uniform and equipment.
- Prerequisites. Students must be in sound physical condition to man fire hoses and work with various damage control equipment. Students must be present for the entire training period to receive credit for the course. The parent command is to certify on student orders that they are medically qualified to attend the Firefighting School. Students/teams reporting for firefighting training without the required medical statements on their orders will not be retained and will be returned to their parent command
