Joseph A. McBrearty, Captain, USN
Commanding Officer
A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Captain McBrearty attended the University of Maryland, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry in 1980. He received his commission upon completion of Officer Candidate School in 1981.
After completion of nuclear power and basic submarine training, Captain McBrearty reported on board USS HENRY CLAY (SSBN 625) GOLD where he served in various Engineering and Operations Department billets and completed four strategic deterrent patrols. In May 1985 he was assigned to the staff of Commander Submarine Group SIX as the Flag Lieutenant for the Group Commander. After completing the Submarine Officer Advanced Course in New London, Connecticut, he served as Engineering Officer on board USS BENJAMIN FRANKLIN (SSBN 640) BLUE. During his tour, the ship completed a refueling overhaul, post overhaul shakedown operations and one strategic deterrent patrol.
Captain McBrearty next served as a member of the Nuclear Propulsion Examining Board on the staff of Commander in Chief United States Pacific Fleet before returning to sea in January 1993 as Executive Officer on board USS HONOLULU (SSN 718). During his tour, the ship completed a Depot Modernization period and an Eastern Pacific deployment. Next, he served as the Military Assistant to the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Policy.
Captain McBrearty assumed command of USS DALLAS (SSN 700) in February 1998. During his tour DALLAS completed the first certification and deployment of the Special Warfare Dry Deck Shelter onboard a LOS ANGELES Class submarine. While under his command, DALLAS earned the COMSUBRON TWO Battle Efficiency “E” for 1999 and 2000 in addition to numerous departmental awards. Upon his relief in November 2000, Captain McBrearty attended the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island where he earned a Masters Degree in International Studies. After completing his Masters Degree, Captain McBrearty reported to Submarine Squadron 2 in New London, Connecticut where he served as Deputy Commander for Training.
From July 2003 to September 2005, Captain McBrearty served as Commanding Officer of Trident Refit Facility in Kings Bay, Georgia. Most recently he served as the Chief of Staff for Commander Submarine Group TWO in New London, CT.
Captain McBrearty’s awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit (two awards), the Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), the Navy Commendation Medal (three awards), and the Navy Achievement Medal (two awards). |
