FCCM(SW/AW) Welter, Command Master ChiefMaster Chief Mike Welter was born in Spokane, Washington. He is a graduate of Sandpoint High School in Sandpoint, Idaho. He entered the Navy in September 1987, attending Recruit Training at RTC San Diego, California. After completion of Basic Training, Master Chief Welter attended Basic Electricity and Electronics School at Naval Technical Training Command, San Diego, California. Upon graduating Fire Controlman “A” school at Service School Command Great Lakes, Illinois, he was appointed to the rate of Fire Controlman Third Class. He then reported to Fleet Training Center San Diego, CA. graduating MK-92 Fire Control System class “C” school and remained in San Diego for his first sea tour aboard USS MAHLON S. TISDALE, FFG-27. While aboard the MAHLON S. TISDALE he graduated two more class “C” schools, Harpoon Weapon System maintenance and Cruise Missile Engagement Planner, was advanced to Fire Controlman Second Class and earned his Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist designation. He then went to Lackland Air Force Base, TX., graduating with honors, from the Apprentice Law Enforcement Specialist Course, with follow on orders to Security Police Department, Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, WA. During this tour, he was promoted Fire Controlman First Class in June 1994, and served the remainder of his tour in the Criminal Investigations Division. Following his law enforcement tour and after an AEGIS Weapon System “C” school, he was a commissioning crew member aboard USS ROSS, DDG-71, home ported in Portsmouth, VA., and was advanced to Chief Petty Officer in 1997. More AEGIS Weapon System training followed and sea tour on USS SAN JACINTO, CG-56, as CF Division Leading Chief Petty Officer. His next assignment was instructor duty at AEGIS Training Readiness Center, Detachment Norfolk, VA., where he earned Master Training Specialist and was advanced to Senior Chief Fire Controlman in 2003. His last tour of duty was aboard USS MASON, DDG-87 as the Combat Systems Department Leading Chief Petty Officer where he was advanced to Master Chief in 2006. Master Chief Welter is currently serving as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader at Officer Training Command Newport, RI. Master Chief Welter’s awards include Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, three awards; Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, two awards; Good Conduct Medal, six awards; and various other naval campaign and service awards. |
