Command Master Chief, Naval Service Training Command

Master Chief Petty Officer (Surface Warfare/Aviation Warfare/) Brian A. Hughes is a native of Tempe, Arizona, enlisted in the Navy in August 1983.  Following recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois, he attended Gunner’s Mate "A" School and the Terrier Guided Missile Launching System “C” School at Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Illinois.

In September 1984, he was assigned to his first sea tour aboard the USS GRIDLEY (CG-21), homeported in San Diego, California.  From 1984 to 1988, he deployed three times to the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans.  He qualified as an Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist and was advanced to Petty Officer First Class.

In September 1988, he was assigned to Recruit Training Command San Diego, California where he served as a Recruit Company Commander. During this tour he earned his Master Training Specialist qualification and was advanced to Chief Petty Officer.

He returned to sea duty in September 1992 aboard the USS JOUETT (CG-29), again homeported in San Diego, deploying in support of Operation SOUTHERN WATCH.  After two years, the USS JOUETT was decommissioned and he accepted orders to the USS CHOSIN (CG-65), homeported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where he served as Leading Chief Petty Officer and was subsequently advanced to Senior Chief Petty Officer.

In June 1997, he was assigned to Naval Personnel Command Millington, Tennessee serving as the West Coast Gunner’s Mate Detailer directly responsible for the training, assignment, and manning of 4800 Gunner’s Mates world-wide.

After advancement to Master Chief Petty Officer in 2001, he was selected into the Command Master Chief Program.  He has since served as Command Master Chief for the Patrol Squadron FOUR SEVEN (VP-47), the Commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing TWO, and Commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing TEN.  He is currently serving as the Command Master Chief for Commander, Naval Service Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois.

Master Chief Hughes is a graduate of the Navy Senior Enlisted Academy in Newport, Rhode Island, graduating with Class 86 in May 2000.

Master Chief Hughes’ personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (with two gold stars), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with three gold stars), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (with two gold stars), and various other unit and campaign awards.
